The prevailing theory regarding the formation of the solar system is known as the nebular hypothesis. According to this hypothesis, the solar system originated from a giant interstellar molecular cloud, known as the solar nebula. This cloud was composed primarily of hydrogen and helium, along with trace amounts of other elements.

Over time, the solar nebula began to collapse under the influence of gravity, leading to its contraction and subsequent formation of a rotating disk. The central region of this disk began to heat up, eventually becoming the protosun, which would later evolve into the Sun. The remaining material in the disk, consisting of gas, dust, and icy particles, started to clump together due to collisions and gravitational attraction.

Within this disk, small particles began to collide and stick together, forming larger bodies known as planetesimals. These planetesimals continued to grow through further collisions and accretion, eventually becoming protoplanets. The protoplanets further accumulated gas and dust from the surrounding disk, growing larger in size.

As time passed, the most massive protoplanets in the disk became the cores of the planets we now know. These cores began attracting a significant amount of gas and dust, forming gas envelopes around them. These envelopes eventually turned into the atmospheres of the respective planets.

The process of planet formation continued until the solar nebula was almost entirely depleted. The remaining gas and dust were either expelled into space or became incorporated into the planets or other celestial bodies such as asteroids and comets.

The solar system we observe today is the result of this vast and complex process that occurred billions of years ago. It consists of the Sun, four inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars), four gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), numerous moons, comets, asteroids, and other smaller objects.

The formation of the solar system provided a suitable environment for the emergence and evolution of life on Earth. The Sun’s energy sustains life by providing warmth and light, while the planets and their gravitational interactions play a crucial role in stabilizing Earth’s orbit and creating a habitable environment.

In conclusion, the solar system formed around 4.6 billion years ago through the collapse of a nebular cloud. This process led to the formation of the Sun, planets, and other celestial bodies, shaping the universe as we know it today.
