Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin: Nobel Peace Prize Nominees

The Nobel Peace Prize, established by Alfred Nobel in 1895, is one of the most prestigious awards presented to individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to world peace. However, throughout its history, the prize has been surrounded by controversy, with some surprising nominees being put forward.

Among the most shocking revelations is that Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Joseph Stalin were all nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. While it may seem inconceivable that these totalitarian dictators could be considered for such an honor, the nomination process allowed anyone who met the criteria to be proposed.

The nomination of Hitler for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1939 mirrors a time when the Nazi regime had not yet fully revealed its true colors. The nomination was made by E.G.C. Brandt, a member of the Swedish parliament, as a satirical commentary to protest against Chamberlain and Daladier, who were nominated for their infamous Munich Agreement with Hitler.

In the case of Mussolini, his nomination occurred in 1935, with the support of an Italian professor, Gabriele d’Annunzio. This controversial nomination aimed to recognize Mussolini’s role in resolving the “Abyssinian Crisis” by signing the Lateran Treaty with the Vatican, which ended decades of hostility between Italy and the Holy See.

Stalin, the Soviet Union’s ruthless leader, surprisingly received multiple nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. While his regime was responsible for numerous human rights violations and atrocities, some individuals believed that his leadership during World War II contributed to regional stability. Notably, Stalin was nominated twice, in 1945 and 1948, by a far-left Swedish politician named E.G.C. Brandt (not to be confused with the earlier nominator of Hitler).

It is important to note that being nominated does not imply any endorsement by the Nobel Committee or indicate that nominees were seriously considered as potential laureates. The Nobel Peace Prize Committee screens all nominations to ensure they meet the selection criteria, which include efforts towards disarmament, mediation, and peace negotiations.

Controversial nominations such as those of Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin reveal the intricacies of the nomination process and the occasional political nuances surrounding the prize. While these nominations may have caused shock and bewilderment, they serve as a stark reminder that even the most respected awards can be subject to unexpected twists.
