Supermassive black holes, on the other hand, are millions or even billions of times more massive than the sun. They reside at the centers of most galaxies, including our own Milky Way. The origins of these behemoths are still a topic of active research, with theories suggesting they may form from the gradual accumulation of mass through the mergers of smaller black holes and the accretion of surrounding matter.

While black holes are invisible due to their lack of light emission, scientists have devised various methods to indirectly detect and study them. One approach involves observing the effect a black hole has on surrounding matter, such as the emission of powerful X-rays from heated gas or the distortion of light from distant stars passing near its gravitational field.

In recent years, the first-ever direct image of a black hole was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope. This groundbreaking achievement provided visual evidence of the black hole’s event horizon, confirming the predictions made by theory.
