As we enter the N2 stage, our brain wave activity slows down further, and our body temperature decreases. This stage accounts for the majority of our sleep time and is characterized by sleep spindles and K-complexes, which play a role in memory consolidation.

Lastly, we reach the N3 stage, also known as deep sleep or slow-wave sleep. During this stage, our brain produces delta waves, and it becomes challenging to wake us up. It is during this deep sleep that our body repairs itself, releases growth hormones, and strengthens our immune system. It is crucial for feeling refreshed and energized upon waking.

After going through these three stages of non-REM sleep, we enter REM sleep. REM sleep is named after the rapid eye movements that occur during this stage. Our brain activity increases, resembling that of when we are awake. This is also when our most vivid and memorable dreams tend to occur.

Now, back to falling asleep. The average person takes around 7 minutes to transition from wakefulness to the first stage of sleep, N1. However, it’s essential to note that this average can vary from person to person depending on several factors, such as age, stress levels, and sleep disorders.

To promote better sleep and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep, there are several lifestyle changes and habits you can adopt. Establishing a relaxing bedtime routine, creating a sleep-friendly environment, avoiding caffeine and electronics before bedtime, and practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation are all helpful strategies.
