Lawn Darts: A Banned Sport in Canada

Lawn darts, also known as Jarts, were once a popular outdoor game enjoyed by many Canadians. However, in 1989, the Canadian government made a significant decision, one that would affect the safety of its citizens. Lawn darts were officially banned in the country, making it illegal to buy, sell, or use them within Canadian borders.

The decision to outlaw lawn darts came in response to several tragic accidents involving these seemingly innocent backyard toys. The sharp-tipped Jarts, weighing around one pound each, were designed to be thrown through the air with precision, aiming for targets placed on the ground. Unfortunately, due to their weight and sharp points, these projectiles posed a serious risk to anyone in their path.

One particularly tragic incident that led to the ban occurred in 1987 when a seven-year-old girl named Michelle Snow was struck in the head by a falling lawn dart. The accident resulted in her untimely death, further emphasizing the danger of these recreational objects. This heartbreaking event sparked a nationwide outcry for stricter regulations regarding lawn darts.

As a direct response to this tragedy, the Canadian government took decisive action. In 1989, they modified the Hazardous Products Act, and lawn darts were officially considered a “dangerous product.” Consequently, it is now illegal to manufacture, import, or sell these projectiles in Canada. The ban also extends to individual possession and use of lawn darts.

The ban on lawn darts in Canada was aimed at preventing further injuries and fatalities caused by these hazardous objects. Although some argue that the responsibility lies with the users to handle lawn darts safely, the Canadian government determined that the risks outweighed the benefits. As a result, the ban on lawn darts remains in place to this day, with strict penalties for those who violate the law.

While many Canadians fondly remember the days of playing lawn darts, the ban serves as a constant reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety in recreational activities. Although the game may have brought joy and entertainment, its potential to cause harm was simply too great.

As time has passed, new and safer forms of outdoor games have emerged, ensuring that Canadians can continue enjoying their leisure time without unnecessary risk. The decision to outlaw lawn darts in Canada demonstrated the government’s commitment to prioritizing public safety, reminding us all to exercise caution when participating in recreational activities.
