Cuba and North Korea: The Two Coca Cola Exceptions

Coca Cola

Coca Cola, the iconic and globally recognized soft drink, has managed to capture the taste buds of people around the world for over a century. From bustling cities to remote villages, chances are you can find a bottle of this beloved soda almost anywhere you go. However, there are only two countries on Earth where you won’t be able to quench your thirst with a refreshing Coca Cola – Cuba and North Korea.

The absence of Coca Cola in these two countries can be attributed to the long-standing trade embargoes imposed by the United States. These embargoes restrict the flow of goods, services, and investments between the US and Cuba and North Korea, as part of political and economic measures against these nations.

Trade Embargo

Let’s start with Cuba. The trade embargo on Cuba dates back to 1960 when the US government decided to sever diplomatic ties and establish a comprehensive economic blockade. As a result, Cuba became cut off from many American products, including Coca Cola. Despite the recent efforts to ease tensions between the two countries, the embargo remains in place, leaving the Cuban people without access to this iconic beverage.

Moving on to North Korea, the situation is slightly different. The trade embargo imposed on North Korea has been in effect since the Korean War in the 1950s. This embargo restricts most trade activities with North Korea, including the importation of Coca Cola. With stringent sanctions in place due to North Korea’s nuclear program, the isolation of the country from global trade continues.

While the absence of Coca Cola may seem like a minor detail, it serves as a symbolic reminder of the larger geopolitical tensions and diplomatic struggles between these nations and the United States. The lack of Coca Cola on Cuban and North Korean shelves reflects the complex relationship and historical disputes that have shaped global politics for decades.

Despite the absence of Coca Cola, both Cuba and North Korea have managed to develop their own alternative soft drinks. Cuba has its famous “TuKola,” a popular local beverage that has filled the void left by Coca Cola. North Korea, on the other hand, has “Koryo Liquor,” a traditional Korean alcoholic drink that has gained popularity among locals.

As the world continues to evolve and change, it remains uncertain whether the trade embargoes on Cuba and North Korea will be lifted in the future. Until then, the Cuban and North Korean people will have to savor the taste of their respective local concoctions, as they continue to be the only two countries on Earth where Coca Cola cannot be found.
